Jason Eckman on Evinrude's New E-Tec G2 Outboards

Jason Eckman is the product marketing manager for the Marine Propulsion Systems division at BRP and has spent his entire career working in the marine industry.  He previously held positions of engineering project manager at BRP and engineering project manager at Regal Marine.  Eckman, 37, is a mechanical engineer with an MBA from the University of Florida.

He was part of the BRP team that this summer launched Evinrude's second-generation E-TEC G2 line of 2-stroke outboards.

The E-TEC G2 is the first outboard BRP has build "from the prop shaft to the flywheel" - its first entirely new product in 38 years - and the company promises as much as 75 percent fewer emissions, 15 percent better fuel efficiency and 20 percent more torque than leading 4-strokes.

Evinrude's 200-, 225-, 250-, and 300-hp E-TEC G2 models debuted at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show at the Broward County Convention Center.

Eckman explains what makes the G2 line unique and BRP's committment to 2-stroke technology.

Why did BRP choose Ft Lauderdale to debut the new E-TEC G2 2-strokes?

Part of it was timing, with the unveiling of the engine this summer, but we know that FLIBS kicks off the boat show season in a big way.  This is a big saltwater show, and the G2 matches the needs of the saltwater customer.  A 200- to 300-hp outboard and South Florida are a perfect match.

The new engines look much different than other outboards.  What was the thinking behind the design?

When looking at the outboard engine industry, you see what we call a "sea of sameness".  We know from our other products that if some people are not uncomfortable with the design initially that we probably didn't go far enough and the consumer will quickly get bored.  The bold, breakthrough design of the Evinrude E-TEC G2 will be turning heads for years to come.

Why offer all of the color options for the engines?

In the past, boaters had to choose between buying a generic-looking engine or paying more than $3,000 to have their engine painted to match their boat.  This was not a reasonable option for most consumers.  The customizable design of the Evinrude E-TEC G2 allows for over 400 different color combinations so othat you can find the perfect match for your boat.

What makes the G2 unique?

We started with a clean sheet of paper.  The Evinrude E-TEC G2 is the first outboard specifically designed for direct injection.  This resulted in the starboard-starboard engine design, which allows both tanks of pistons to thrust away from the exhaust port, resulting in a more reliable design.  A titanium oxide coating over aluminum parts also gives us confidence to offer a standard five-year corrosion warranty.

What are some of the biggest innovations of the G2?

One of the biggest innovations can be found in the clean rigging.  This feature not only improves reliability by keeping the rigging from moving, but also returns up to two feet of usable space at the transom back to the boater.

BRP is offering a "5-5-5 Warranty" for 5-year engine and corrosion protection and 500 hours/5 years with no dealer-scheduled maintenance.  What gives you the confidence to offer that kind of coverage?

Most of the items that are serviced during routine maintenance do not wear out but fail because something else has gone wrong without warning.  By adding the visual gear oil reservoir, there is more, capacity, and the quantity and quality of oil can be verified periodically.  The water pump is oversized to maintain cooling even as it wears.  A fuel sensor is monitoring the health of the fuel filter.  And there are no shift or throttle linkages that require adjustment.

Can you tell us about the automatic storage and winterization features?

Auto-Storage and winterization is a feature found only in the Evinrude E-TEC.  When activated, it allows a consumer to quickly store or winterize their engine without bringing it to a dealer.  If they get one more nice weekend and decide to pull it out of storage, they simply turn the key and go.

What type of boat is the G2 best suited for?

The Evinrude E-TEC G2 is designed to deliver unrivaled and cleanest performance; bold, breakthrough design; and unmatched lifetime value on all types of boats in the 200- to 300-hp category, including bass, multi-species, inshore, offshore and pontoons.

The G2 is offered in models from 200 to 300 hp.  Are there plans for additional options?

Within the next few years, you can expect us to deploy the E-TEC G2 technology across our relevant platforms.

Four-stroke technology has a reputation for quieter, cleaner operation, so why has BRP/Evinrude stuck with 2-strokes?

BRP offers a wide variety of propulsion technologies, including 4-stroke engines.  For the outboard engine application, no technology better meets the needs of the consumer than the E-TEC.  Nothing else comes close to delivering this unrivaled performance while meeting all emissions requirements like an Evinrude E-TEC.

What do you want people here at the show to know about both the G2 and the Evinrude of today?

BRP is introducing a new era in the outboard engine industry with the Evinrude E-TEC G2.  Boaters can expect 20% more torque, 15% better fuel efficiency and 75% fewer emissions.  The bold, breakthrough design offers customizable panel architecture, the industry's first clean rigging and fully integrated digital controls.  Finally, the unmatched lifetime value is supported by a 5-year engine warranty, 5-year corrosion warranty, and 5 years or 500 hours of no dealer-scheduled maintenance.
